Here we are in 2012 so Cameron and Sr. are off to some trade shows. We'll be at: Puyallup Sportsman's Show January 25th - 29th Vancouver Boat Show February 8th - 12th Abbotsford Fishing and Hunting show - March 2nd - 4th Victoria Outdoor Adventure Show - April 21st and 22nd Always look forward to seeing some friendly faces at the show so please stop by and say hello if you're there. Heads up to guests who stay in the suites - we're planning to refurnish the suites (that's units 41-46 and 51-56) so the futon couch will be replaced with a single day bed. There will still be bunk beds and therefore still 3 beds in total in each room - but the couch no longer folds down to a double. High tide and high winds out at Nootka in November and December. Cameron said it's the worst storm he's seen in his 20 years out there and he was relieved it all held together. Cameron had to hang on or be blown overboard during 100kmph winds. There was a little damage, but nothing Cameron and Crew couldn't repair the following week. The worst storms for us are usually in November, so hope the worst has passed for this winter. It's the first time we've walked down the ramp to shore. Recognize anybody in this poster? This is a picture of Catherine and Bryce visiting Luna on the poster that's outside of movie theaters showing The Whale. The movie Saving Luna was a fabulous documentary about Luna the orphan whale who lived in Nootka Sound. We gather that documentary was reworked to be released in the US as The Whale, now with Ryan Reynolds narrating. Susanne and Mike lived in Nootka for several years while they made the movies and became friends of Luna and Nootka locals. They need all the help they can get promoting the movie as they don't have a Hollywood budget, so if you can send the trailer link to some friends that would be great. Even for those who weren't fans of Luna, the scenery is phenomenal and all sides of the story are told. You can check out the movie trailer here (you'll hear Cameron) and their web site for more info: The Whale Trailer Mountainside Films The Forbes family was out at Nootka for the weekend of October 23rd, and on a trip to Friendly Cove we saw this Sea Lion taking a break in an anchored boat. In over 60 years of living at Friendly Cove, Ray said he'd never seen a Sea Lion welcome himself aboard before. We missed his departure, but he was gone a few hours later, so he had no trouble getting back out. We're closed for the 2011 season and no longer selling gas for 2011. If you have been to Critter Cove this summer and have an great fishing pictures (we especially like those pictures taken on the boat) please share them with us and send to Catherine to post. Here's Mavis and Jim, our 2012 Fishing for Hearts derby winners. They are holding the sculpture that they get to keep, a Raku piece by Ed Oldfield. August 24th - It's been a great week. We just completed the third annual Fishing for Hearts Derby. Alan Story started off the derby with a 26 pounder. Peter Innes beat that fish by half a pound. Then in the last few hours Mavis and Jim came in with the winner - a 28.25. The real story here is that they had released a 35 pounder. They were fishing by the lighthouse and caught it - but that was in the ribbon area where Chinook over 77cm must be released - so these honest fishermen did just that, and let her go. The fish Gods rewarded them with the winning 28.25 a little later and a little further out, when they were clear of that ribbon area. There were fish both inside and out today. There are fish at Moocha Bay and the highway - and all points inbetween, so everyone did well. August 17th - great fishing inside and out! Bajo was calm with great fishing yesterday. There were fish inside yesterday (good at the mouth of the Hisnit), and this morning the wall was hot, so we figure more fresh fish moved inside last night. August 15th - Great fishing day today. The fishermen who went outside were rewarded. Carlos and Armondo were outfished by Kaz on her first trip here with them. Kaz caught this 36 pounder. This is the biggest so far this summer. August 10th - fishing is still great. I talked to Tracy tonight who said they "had the best day ever". It was calm outside and many fishermen did well out there. Inside fishermen did well today too. August 5th - Fishing has been fantastic. There are lots of fish inside and spread over all the popular spots - and even in the middle of the Inlet. Everyone is having lots of action. The fishermen who go outside are catching lots of Coho and Chinook and even some halibut. August 1st - another great day. Lots of fishermen went outside as it was calm out there today and lots of fish came back. Chrissy from the front desk was out with Terry Knight and they brought in a 32 pounder. Lots of nice fish coming from inside too. July 29th - fishing still great. Outside was calm yesterday and those who were out there at slack tide did really well. There's also fish inside - San Carlos was good this morning we hear. Today is sunny and calm with blue sky - and fish - does it get any better? July 24th - still great fishing. Two different groups checked in this morning and already had their limit of Chinook for the day. They had stopped at Camel Rock on the way here. It was calm outside today and fishing was great out there too. July 22nd - It was a fantastic day fishing here. Lots of action inside and out. It was calm outside. Chrissy and Candace went fishing with Grant & Julie in Getdanet before their afternoon shift. They were using Grants customized Tomic spoon for the first time this morning (a 775 with pilchard dots) and it was hot. July 22nd - it's already a fantastic day fishing. It's 8 am as I write this and several boats are back with all the fish they are allowed today. Fishermen had a great day yesterday too even though it was too lumpy to fish comfortably outside. Mike's new spoon performed yesterday again, so we'll be making more. It's a 6" tomic and the color is called Irish cream with pilchard dots. It's fluorescent green and white with scale, then UV on the front and glow on the back. July 20th - great fishing. Today's hot spots were Bajo, Strange Island, San Carlos and the Slide. There was lots of action everywhere. Big Tomic spoons are doing well. Sherry left the spoon in her 35 pounder to show us. This spoon is called the Kelly pilchard, and Mr. Kelly who first suggested the color in 2009 is visiting Critter Cove right now. Sherry gave him an assist on this fish. Mike the Codfather brought in 10 Chinook 18-27 pounds and they were on 6" Spoons too (color to be announced - it's a new color and today was the first day Mike fished it). July 19th: Fishing is still great. Mike the Codfather is back on the dock. The first fish he brought in was a 35 pounder. He uses Tomic exclusively for salmon fishing, so we know he was using Tomic. Today it was a 6" 639 spoon. Here's a picture of 8 year old Luke with is first Tyee: ![]() July 18th: Sunny and calm with good fishing - pinch me. Lots of fish inside and out. The biggest fish in the picture below was 32 pounds. July 15th: It was a bit lumpy outside so not as many fishermen ventured out there. The fish have really moved inside though - Hoiss Point and San Carlos in particular today. July 13th - Fishing is still great. Lots of Coho and Chinook outside from Burdwood to Bajo and all points in-between. It's been like a mill pond outside. Chinook at Tahsis Inlet and Hoiss Point too. Here's some recent photos below, and one of Bajo the dock dock looking for some shade. July 11th - Fishing continues to be fantastic. Calm outside today so most fishermen ventured out there and it was great fishing. Burdwood to Bajo and all points in between. Lots of fun had by all. Dan, Dewey and Karen had a fabulous day today. The biggest Chinook in the photo below is 35 pounds, and the biggest halibut is 69. They were outside - halibut is a hint, eh? Fishing was great today. One of our long time guests said he'd never seen fishing as good as it was today in all his life. July 8th - Here's Craig with a Tyee for his last morning here. 35.5 pounds. We are not sure where this fish was caught but we did hear it was good fishing outside and there were some caught at San Carlos Point today as well. July 7th - They're inside! It was windy out front today so many fishermen tried the protected waters around Hoiss Point, Tahsis Inlet, & Strange Island - and caught Chinook. Right now the list is shorter if you ask "where aren't the fish biting?", because everyone we talked to had a great day. July 6th - fishing is great. Outside fishing is on fire - lots of Coho and Chinook. Lots of bait - lots of action. Most fishermen are releasing more fish than they are keeping. They're biting just about anything and they're deep, they're shallow - they're everywhere. Many fishermen are opting for big spoons and plugs to target the bigger fish. We suspect most of these fish are from Southern rivers and they're just stopping on their way by, and we can still look forward to our Conuma River fish. So glad summer is here! Here's a picture of the Tyee that came in at dark July 2nd: Most fish are coming in from Bajo, Friendly Cove, Wash Rock or Macquinna Point. Lots of big Coho out there too. July 3rd - we're having a little trouble with incoming phone calls to our phone out here. Email is still working - we're trying hard to get it fixed soon!We opened with our Jack and Jill derby June 16th, so our 2011 season is now under way. There was a fantastic group here for the derby - lots of fish and lots of fun. Bob Beard was the winning fisherman with the first Tyee of the season - a 31.5 pounder. In second place with a 26.25 pounder was Caroline Shillito. The Jack and Jill 2011 winners Bob and Morraine: Back to top of page |
