Critter
Cove is located in the heart of Nootka Sound (West Coast Vancouver
Island), 18 kilometres by water
from the
Village
of Gold River.
The
main attraction to Nootka is the world class salmon fishing in calm
water. From June to October salmon
are returning to three main rivers in Nootka. Other salmon are also
stopping to feed in Nootka on their journey to more southern rivers.
Fishermen
have the option of fishing the calm inside waters of the Sound or
the open Pacific at the entrance to the Sound and beyond.
Nootka is famous for big Chinook, commonly 25 to 40 pounds and
sometimes even above 60 pounds. The big Coho in late August
and September are also a spectacular sport fish. They are
commonly 12 to 18 pounds, and sometimes even bigger (we've had a 29
pounder at the dock)! Fishermen will find all species of
Pacific salmon, halibut, and other ground fish.
If you have your own boat, you
may like one of our floating rooms (cabin, suite, or lodge room), or a
beach house which is along our boardwalk on land. If you can't bring
your own boat, but you are comfortable fishing on your own, staying in
one of our beach cottages might suit you. The use of a fishing boat is
included with the cottage.
At Critter Cove you can set
your own fishing schedule. Our licensed restaurant is open at first
light for coffee and baking. Breakfast is served from 8 to 11,
lunch is 11 to 1, soup and desserts are available from 11am to 10pm,
then dinner is served from 4 to 7. If you wish to eat past 7, you
can reserve dinner and it will be boxed up and ready for you in the
restaurant when you come in. Guests often cook some meals on their
own, in their boats, or on the deck in front of their rooms on a
camp stove or propane barbecue.
You’ll
find everything you will need for a successful fishing trip including
gas, ice, fish cooler, bait and a tackle store. Old friends or
corporate group, large group or small, we will customize a retreat to
suit your needs.
